In the mid-19th century, Berlin suffered from catastrophic sanitary conditions. Without a centralized water supply or sewer system, fecal matter, wastewater, and garbage flowed unfiltered into open gutters, where they rotted and spread disease. The Spree River became severely polluted, and even after the first water treatment plant began operations in 1856, the situation worsened again due to rising water volumes. To resolve the public health crisis, a committee led by Rudolf Virchow and James Hobrecht launched a comprehensive sewer system project in 1867.<\/p>
Hobrecht designed a system consisting of twelve radial networks with pumping stations that directed wastewater through pressure pipes to large-scale irrigation fields. As early as 1874, Berlin acquired the first plots of land for this purpose in the southern part of the city and developed the Osdorf and Friederickendorf irrigation estates, complete with estate buildings and stables. These irrigation fields, including the extensive areas of Hobrechtsfelde, played a crucial role in public health. Sewage was purified through natural soil filtration before it entered the groundwater. At the same time, the land was used for agricultural purposes, creating an early model of sustainable resource cycles.<\/p>
Construction of this system began with the groundbreaking ceremony in 1873, transforming Berlin into a hygienically modern metropolis. Hobrechtsfelde thus became a key public health project that curbed disease, improved water quality, and protected millions of Berliners from the consequences of uncontrolled wastewater disposal. As a result, the site became an early example of a functioning circular economy that connected the city and the countryside and enabled both hygienic and ecological progress.<\/p>
