Without a centralized water supply or sewer system, fecal matter, wastewater, and garbage flowed unfiltered into open gutters, where they rotted and spread disease. To address this public health crisis, a committee led by Rudolf Virchow and James Hobrecht launched a comprehensive sewer project in 1867. Hobrecht designed a system consisting of twelve radial networks with pumping stations that directed wastewater through pressure pipes to large-scale irrigation fields.<\/p><p>Construction of this system began with the groundbreaking ceremony in 1873, transforming Berlin into a hygienically modern metropolis. Hobrechtsfelde thus became a pivotal public health project that curbed disease, improved water quality, and protected millions of Berliners from the consequences of uncontrolled wastewater disposal.
